Tuber is a YouTube HD Video Downloader for Windows.

YouTube boasts the largest selection of videos online as well as millions of songs that are embedded in those videos. Most of these videos are ad-supported and require an active Internet connection for you to watch. A YouTube downloader is a program that lets you download those videos as well as music files so that you can enjoy them later without ads and without being online.

There is no shortage of YouTube downloader applications. This is a competitive software segment with options ranging from basic freeware utilities to application suites that are full-priced or even require a subscription. Tuber is developed by APQuantum, which seeks to find its sweet spot somewhere in the middle. The app is free to use but limited and ad-supported, and if you want to eliminate those advertisements and have access to all features, you have to pay a one-time fee for a software license.

Does Tuber manage to stand out in this crowded field of YouTube video downloaders for Windows? In some ways but perhaps not enough to motivate most users to cough up some cash. The two things it does quite well is its media browser and its media player. You can log in to YouTube or access it as an anonymous user. The browser offers both a list and grid view, and Tuber’s grid view arguably does a better job of eliminating clutter than the YouTube website. You can also view videos by Channels, which is helpful, but Subscriptions, History, Library, Watch Later and so forth are not available.

Like many YouTube downloaders, Tuber lets you download the music directly. In other words, you select a video—such as music video—but only have a music file as a result. With so many artists and labels now using YouTube as a platform, this is a convenient way for some to build up an MP3 library. MP3 is the only option. Tuber does not support other file formats even if those formats are native to the video.

Tuber promotes in and outside the program that it lets you download content up to whatever resolution is supported for the particular source up to 4K—which is the YouTube limit as of this writing. The basic version of this program, however, does not do that. It supports 720p, 480p and lower. This is fine in most cases, especially when downloading files for a smartphone or the like, but if your intention is to save HQ files for viewing later on a big screen television, basic Tuber comes up a bit short.

Selecting what you want is something else that Tuber does well. You can click a video to watch it or right-click to go the download pane. If watching it, you can right-click it from there or click the down arrow, which provides more options. The download pane lists all of the available qualities for both videos and music as well as a file size estimate in many cases. Just click the down arrow to get the file.

One of the issues with the Tuber YouTube Video Downloader that may irk a lot of users is that it wants to have its cake and eat it too. It markets itself as a 4K HDR downloader but actually limits you to 720p. There are a number of free options that handle 1080p, 4K and resolutions in between.

The program also bombards you with ads, so it is filtering out the advertising YouTube would normally present and showing you its own and then some. Those ads are removed if you upgrade, but APQuantum is rather coy about the pricing and only reveals it after you have the app running. Prices are subject to change, but as of this writing, the asking price was a bit obnoxious at best.
